In the past few years many people have discussed the prehistoric diet and forms of exercise, they state that our bodies have not changed in all that time . So in order to stay fit we should mimic the regime of our ancestors 10,000 years ago. This was a time before man had domesticated animals, wheat, rice or any of our stable crops.Cave men would dine on the dead and decaying remains of animals, gather wild plants, fruit, berries and nuts, or hunt for small animals and birds.

So our ancestors would wonder around looking for food, on the coast maybe fishing or collecting shell fish. So an active life, low energy activities interspersed with occasional bursts of high energy activities. These activates would be things such as chasing after animals in a hunt, fighting between males or rival tribes or even running away from the many predators such as lions, tigers and bears

From an exercise and diet point of view this means we are best suited to low energy activities interspersed with short bursts of high energy actions. We should eat only the carbohydrates found in nuts, berries fruit and other basic food stuffs. We should avoid foods based on cultivated cereal crops such as wheat.

So how would the normal cyclist use this information to improve their personal fitness regime. First of all no electric or motor bikes, you have to put the effort in yourself! Being out and about on your bicycle is fun, very low pollution good for your fitness and you can even use them for getting to work or your local shops. So to achieve the body you want you should use your cycle as much as you can, don’t drive to the shops get on your womens bike. When you are cycling use a slower speed for most of the time but occasionally sprint for about three minuets. Slow down for a period until your heart rate slows down again then repeat the process several times. Be sure you have space for the burst, traffic free cycle paths are really good for this. Research has shown that following this kind of exercise schedule will lead to a dramatic improvement in heart and lung function and a reduction in body fat.
