1000 subs. Who’d a thunk it?
January 16th, 2010 | by admin |
Basically just an introduction. I don’t have much of a personality in my videos, so I figured I mightcould change that. Anyway, just a little about me… might as well skip it, honestly.
1) What I’ve been up to and why no recent videos.
2) Random facts about me you probably had no desire to know.
3) A smattering of some of my philosophical positions.
4) Some youtubers I like and recommend.
5) What the next video is probably gonna be on and when.

Oh, I love his …
Oh, I love his foundational falsehoods series. He’s more the scientific atheist focusing more on creationism vs. evolution whereas I’m more focused on religion/theism vs. atheism. That’s twice in a day someone has compared me to him, though. Weird.

Didn’t see any of …
Didn’t see any of his videos in your favorites so thought I would let you know about Aronra. He’s a lot like you, he knows his shit! Defiinately one of the smartest people I’ve ever come accross on Youtube. I just subscribed after seeing your response to 5 questions for Atheists. I find your debates with Theists hillariously entertaining.

I think I agree; I …
I think I agree; I tend to avoid using the term “relativism” because it’s too furry a term. I like moral nihilism because it’s the blankest slate and it’s the only real position I have on the nature of prescription.

Tons is, I suspect, something of a generous overstatement- not that your page doesn’t warrant tons, just that I can’t see my recommendation as being all that compelling to people.

I guess the proper …
I guess the proper title is – human being. We are all moralists by default. It’s only religious control freaks who wish to speak of “morality” and “moralism” in the first place, because such rhetoric already contains the implication of false objectivity – and therefore the potential for power and control.

Then what is the …
Then what is the proper title?
Nihilist? Moral Nihilist? Meta-ethical relativism? Normative relativism?

There’s actually no …
There’s actually no such thing as “moral relativism”. Or, at least it’s tautological and redundant; it’s like speaking about “circular roundness”.

And in a sense …
And in a sense they’re not completely off the mark; there ARE moral relativists of a normative stripe. Personally I don’t understand how they make it work: it just seems so obviously broken to me. But I digress. I just try to lead them by the hand to this: you cannot point to a moral fact, consequently moral realism fails, and most conventional concepts of normativity collapse under their own weight.

They do seem unable …
They do seem unable to step outside their “normative habit.” That is, a person trying to conceive of what life would be like without an objective morality frequently fails to isolate all of the implications of THEIR worldview and set them aside for the exercise. They’ll continue to argue from the position that moral relativism will bring you into conflict with some objective morality and never try to evaluate it in terms of it’s internal consistency or its consistency with reality.
